Introduction
Every ten years, all accredited institutions of higher education in the southern United States are required to renew their status by demonstrating they continue to meet the accreditation standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ (SACS) Commission on Colleges (COC). In 2001, the COC adopted new processes that significantly changed both the philosophy and format of the new reaffirmation process. Reaffirmation under the new Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement requires completion of two distinct initiatives: the Compliance Certification review and the development of a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). San Jacinto Community College District SJCCD is currently engaged in the development of the QEP, and will submit the plan in July 2008. The QEP link at the top of this page provides an overview of the College's focus and objectives.
About SACS
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is a regional agency which accredits institutions in eleven southern states and Latin America that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s and/or doctoral degrees. SACS is only one of six such regional accrediting organizations in the U.S. recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Member institutions are accredited through one of SACS’ three commissions: the Commission on Colleges, the Commission on Secondary and Middle Schools, and the Commission on Elementary and Middle Schools. In preparing for reaffirmation, postsecondary member institutions work with and through the Commission on Colleges (COC), the representative body of the College Delegate Assembly, which is charged with carrying out the accreditation process. For further information, there is a quick link at the top of the page which will connect the reader with the SACS website.
Process for Reaffirmation
San Jacinto Community College District participates in the SACS reaffirmation process voluntarily as a statement of our commitment to quality educational practices. We invite peer members from other SACS institutions to review our policies, procedures, and practices as independent evidence of our continued compliance with the standards of this regional accrediting agency.
The SACS Reaffirmation process under the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement includes:
- the completion of a comprehensive analysis report demonstrating our level of compliance with the standards appropriate for assuring quality in higher education;
- an Off Site review of that compliance report;
- an On Site review of the institution; and,
- the development of a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) that engages the wider academic community and addresses one or more issues that enhances student learning and contributes to institutional improvement.
