Eric Taylor
Louisiana State University at Shreveport
Overall: 5-25 (one season)
Eric Taylor enters his second season as head coach of the San Jacinto College women’s basketball team. Although still somewhat new to the head coach position, Taylor is no stranger to the College or the team. He served previously as a team consultant while in the role of physical education instructor and director of intramural sports.
Taylor assumed the role of head coach prior to the 2008-09 season, replacing Shawn Silman who stepped down after 12 seasons. As a rookie head coach, Taylor and San Jac finished 5-25 on the season, but he has recruited what he believes to be a solid team, and is ready to step on the court this season.
“I love the game. That’s why I coach,” noted Taylor. “I like coaching at the junior college level because I can make a difference in a person’s life. I can share with them my past experience and teach them how to get to the level they want to be at.”
Taylor is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, where he attended Captain Shreve High School. He lettered three years on the basketball team and graduated with a 3.2 GPA. He went on to play at Holmes Community College in Goodman, Mississippi, where he averaged 11.7 points and six rebounds per game for the Bulldogs. He then transferred to the University of Southwestern Louisiana where he averaged 16 points and eight rebounds per game, and later played for Wiley College in Marshall, Texas.
Taylor’s coaching career includes a stint as an assistant coach at Southern University in Shreveport, where he also earned associate degrees in computer science and mathematics. He earned a bachelor of science in health and physical secondary education at Louisiana State University at Shreveport. Taylor played professionally in the Southwestern Basketball League in Dallas, and on the Pro-Am Circuit in the Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma region.
“I’m excited to be the head coach at San Jacinto College,” added Taylor. “It is my belief that through hard work, commitment and dedication, we can reach the goals we’ve set for us here at San Jacinto College.”
Taylor and his wife, Kimberly, have two children: Xavier, 18; and Kayla, 11.
Ajani Spiller
First Season
A veteran basketball coach for 13 years, Ajani Spiller is in his first season as an assistant with the San Jac program. Like Head Coach Eric Taylor, Spiller is no stranger to San Jacinto College. He is currently working toward an associate degree in physical education, and will graduate next Spring with that degree. He would then like to work towards a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, possibly at Texas Southern University.
Spiller’s coaching background includes nine years with the nationally-ranked AAU program Texas Hooping Angels from Houston’s East side. One of Spiller’s protégés is former San Jac All-American Taujhnae Travis, who currently plays at Oklahoma Baptist.
“I have always been interested in coaching,” says Spiller. “Having been an AAU coach in the Houston area, I’ve had a connection to the San Jac program. When coach Taylor offered me the assistant coach position, I was ecstatic about the opportunity. My sole reason for coaching is to help kids!”
When not on the sidelines as a coach, Spiller enjoys all sports, and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Alicia, have a daughter A’brianah (10), son Amari (4) and are expecting their third child, a girl, in February 2010.
