WHARTON, Texas – San Jacinto College volleyball defeated Laredo Community College 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) on Friday in first round action of the Region XIV tournament.

Candace Soares (Mililani, Hawaii) came out as the night’s leader with 15 digs and nine kills. Teammates Christie Dorch (Friendswood) and Holly Moreno (Pearland) each knocked down eight kills. Moreno also showed strong serves with six aces.

“The girls were really controlled and focused tonight; they did a good job,” said Head Coach Sharon Nelson.

The San Jac volleyball team will continue its vie for National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament at 2 p.m. Saturday against Lee College, who beat host Wharton 3-1. The NJCAA national tournament will be held Nov. 18-23 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

San Jac (29-7) is looking for its fifth-straight Region XIV District M championship. Last season, the team finished fifth in the nation, the highest national tournament finish under the tutelage of Nelson.
