BULLARD, Texas — San Jacinto College South’s men’s soccer team gave the nation’s top-ranked team, Tyler Junior College, a run for its money, but fell short in a 3-1 loss in the Region XIV championship game, played Oct. 31 in Bullard.

San Jac’s lone goal resulted from a two-on-one in the 47th minute, with midfielder Akeem Brown giving a quick pass to midfielder Edward Campbell for the short goal.

Prior to the loss and elimination from the playoffs, San Jac  (11-6-1) had defeated Tyler five consecutive times in playoff matches. But SJC head coach Dr. David Santesteban knew his squad would have their hands full against a very quick and aggressive Tyler team, who enter the district playoffs undefeated for the season and beat San Jac twice in the regular season (3-2 and 2-0).

“Our team fought hard against a very good team – the number one team in the nation,” commented Santesteban. “Our guys have nothing to hang their heads about. We had our ups and downs during the regular season, and during this playoff game. We had a couple of our key players out sick, and yet we came close to tying the game late. We just could not come up with a key put-away-goal. But that’s just the way it goes in this sport. Our guys fought hard and came back for a nice finish down the stretch. We just came up a little short in the end. Now it’s time to go back to the drawing board and regroup and make a better run at it next year.”
